There are four general criteria that an insurance company follow while insuring to avoid financial jeopardy of the company itself. The four general criteria are 1.Losses must be uncertain 2. The losses have to be accidental or unintentional 3.The losses must be measurable and identifiable 4.The losses must be non-catastrophic.
There are different types of insurance for any kind of quantifiable risk. Life , health, property,etc can be insured provided it fits according to the rules of the insurance company.There are two types of insurance company 1.Life Insurance company 2.General Insurance company.

He/she must also be sure that the insurer is authorised by FSA (Financial Services Authority).Before taking any decision one should have a comprehesive knowledge of the life insurance market.
